About our Frames

About our Frames

At Underlyn we pride ourselves on designing sustainable, handcrafted, and unique frames that are just as storied as the artwork they hold.

From contemporary minimalist to ornate and elegant to unique pinewood fire-crafted frames, we’ve got something for every style and taste. Choose among one-of-a-kind textures, patterns, and finishes for framed art that expertly places unconscious anchor points, subtle duality, and memorable pieces to last a lifetime.

Every one of our frames is original, made-to-order, and built by hand using the highest quality raw materials, including reclaimed wood. Underlyn is one of the only companies in the world that produces fire-crafted frames using the ancient Japanese technique of wood preservation called ‘Shou-sugi-ban.’

‘Shou-sugi-ban’ translates to “burnt cedar board.” This act of creating a more durable and visually appealing material has been commonplace in Japan since the 1700s. However, this charring technique is considered a “lost art” as modern plastics and prefab materials have largely replaced traditional craftsmanship.

We’ve not only brought back ‘shou-sugi-ban’ but ALL of the frames are built with careful attention to every detail. From hidden corner joints to fire-crafted textures, you will not find any mass produced, prefabricated or glued together pieces or products here.

Meet the Framers

The quality of our beautiful, custom-built frames would not be possible without our framers, and their unique skills. Passed down through generations of family tradition, the art of woodworking and frame making is intimately learned by those who grew up around it.

Our woodworking team—with over 50 years of experience between them—strives to create the best quality frames available today. Their ability to perfectly fuse traditional and modern frame making techniques ensures that each frame is truly individual and showcases the craft and skill of each woodworking artisan.

Ramu, another of our craftsmen, specializes in ornate, hand-finished detailing. He’s been a woodworking artisan for 7 years having trained under Sreenu’s father.

Ramesh is one of our expert painters. He specializes in hand-painting intricate details and unique spray-painting techniques. His knowledge of sourcing and use of sustainable paints has come in very handy at Underlyn.

These talented artisans study the grain structure on every piece of wood and allow that to influence how the piece should be shaped, especially in the case of our fire-crafted frames. Pairing the rich history of our woodworker’s skills with that of the journeys taken by the reclaimed source materials themselves, each frame is guaranteed to have its own uniqueness and story.

Underlyn supports skill development and knowledge transfer, especially from skilled artisans to unemployed youth in the local region so as to both preserve the long traditions of craftsmanship and provide sustainable incomes to the local youth.

By purchasing an Underlyn frame you’re receiving a truly unique, one-of-a-kind piece masterfully created by our skilled craftsmen.
