The Asiatic Lion, a subspecies that once inhabited Western Asia and the Middle East as far as Turkey, Iran and Mesopotamia, is now confined to the Gir National Park in Gujarat, India. Sometimes referred to as the Indian or Persian Lion, this endangered species live in large prides on the grasslands, taking care of their young and hunting chital, sambar and buffalo for food.
