Natives to the coasts of the North Pacific Ocean, sea otters rarely venture very far out into the sea. They dive to the sea floor to dig out sea urchins, crustaceans and smaller fish. For nearly two hundred years, sea otters were hunted by poachers for the exceptionally thick coats of fur. They’re gentle creatures that lovingly nurture their young against their own bodies, defenseless against human depredations. And in recent decades, conservation efforts have borne fruit, seeing the otter population increase with each passing year.
