Description
The blue jay is often thought of as the nightingale of North America for the sweetness of its voice. Although similar in proportions to sparrows and swallows, its bright blue plumage distinguishes it from all other songbirds. This piece is a stylised depiction of the shy bird, completed with a floral flourish across the feathers. For in African American folklore, the blue jay created the Earth itself, and all the creatures in it sprung forth from her birdsong.
