The battle was hard fought, a bitter struggle to the very end. And one of the armies did win, or so it was written in the annals. But there were things never spoken of, not in the histories, certainly not among the survivors. When steel rang against steel, when the battle cries roared in their ears, it wasn’t courage that drove them forward. It wasn’t even loyalty. Nothing in those moments was quite so terrible, quite so desperate as the fear of death. And that alone kept them alive.
