Although oil painting has existed since the fifth century, it was only in 15th-century Europe that it became popular among artists. Oil-based paints, unlike water color and tempera paints, were more resilient and the colors they produced were brighter than anything used before. It was an opportunity for artists to develop techniques like contrast and texture, as in this image of magnolia blooms. The purple hue of the flowers doesn’t stand out, but instead creates a pleasant contrast between the light background and the darker branches and leaves.
