The false bird-of-paradise gets its name from the shape of its blooms, which from a distance look like the beaks off some water bird. The brightly colored petal is in fact a waxy bract, a sort of leaf that attracts pollinating creatures to the true flower that sprouts from inside of it. Native to the tropical Americas, these flowers on hummingbirds to spread their pollen, given unusual shape of the flower.
