Impressionism began in the 19th-century when artists grew jaded of paintings that closely imitated reality, a response to the rigidity of realism. There was a greater emphasis on the use of light and colour, the interplay and mixing of hues on the canvas and what they could convey to the viewer. There was beauty in the mundane, they believed, because it wasn’t so much about capturing the image with accuracy, but reproducing the element of human perception onto the canvas, all its prejudices, its imperfections laid bare. Art wasn’t for God anymore; it was for all of us.
