Choosing Wall Decor For Your Home: A Handy Guide

It isn’t easy choosing the right kind of wall decor for your home when there are so many options. You don’t know what should go where, what fits with your aesthetic, and whether you even need it. Cramming your home full of stuff will resemble a badly curated museum than a tasteful, pleasant home. Besides, what can you afford, and how easily can you maintain it long-term? Choosing wall decor for your home is as much of a science as it an art. These are questions you need to have answers to when it’s time to brighten up that empty wall space.

In this post, we’re going to help you get started by comparing the best types of wall decor that we know you’ll love.

1. Macrame Wall Hangings

Macrame is surprisingly uncommon in most homes for how gorgeous it looks. Typically made by braiding long threads of cotton in mesmerising patterns, macrame functions best as a minimalist accompaniment to an aesthetic of soft colours and light tones. Textile art isn’t terribly mainstream today, but we think that just makes it so much more charming.

Pricing:

What makes macrame so compelling is how affordable it is. An average-size wall-hanging can be as cheap as USD $15, and even biggest, most elaborate ones don’t cost most than $80. It’s especially suited to a house you’ve just moved into and don’t have a lot to spend on non-essentials.

Availability:

Macrame is surprisingly easy to find, with Etsy and Amazon having dozens of wall hangings in many different styles and price points. Most macrame pieces are fairly small, and because they’re just a wooden rod with yarn attached to it, they’re really easy to ship and store.

Ease of Installation:

Macrame is incredibly simple—lengths of braided cotton yarn hanging from a wooden support rod—so installing it is as easy as hanging it from a hook or nail in the wall. Some larger pieces can even be used as curtains for small doorways.

Maintenance:

The textile used in macrame is lightly dyed, if at all, so fading isn’t much of an issue. For pieces with coloured yarn, keeping them out of constant sunlight should suffice. If it really gets dirty, you can just wash it with cold water and mild detergent, and it’ll be looking good as new.

Decor Style Compatibility:

Macrame is delightfully versatile, largely because of how unobtrusive it is. It works best with minimalist decor and a light colour palette, and lends a sense of zen-like calm to a room. One of the styles we like best is beach-shack aesthetic, with rustic, simple decor and plenty of sunlight. Macrame hangings can even double as doorway curtains if they’re big enough, giving your home a bohemian look.

2. Wall Baskets

If you’re looking for something a little unconventional to spice up your living room, try a wall basket set. Sisal and napier grass are handwoven into hypnotic circular designs, and in a collection, no two baskets look the same. The beauty of wall baskets lies in their asymmetry — a cluster of patterned circles create interesting, amorphous shapes that would never work in a grid.

Pricing:

Wall baskets are on the more luxury end of wall decors for the home, with prices on Etsy between $30 to $40 for a basket. A display of baskets usually has 4-5 baskets, so a full set can cost as much as $200.

Availability:

Wall baskets are somewhat niche, usually being sourced from Africa, which means you’ll likely find them on specialty stores online, or in Africa-themed home decor stores. That doesn’t mean they’re hard to find, but they can be uncommon.

Ease of Installation:

Wall baskets are extremely light, which makes them easy to hang. However, you’ll need to be careful hanging them on wall hooks, making sure they don’t damage the weave of the basket. Alternatively, you can use a nail with a small head that could fit through the weave itself.

Maintenance:

Wall baskets are made from tough dried grass, which means they don’t deteriorate over time or even fade much in sunlight. Occasionally dusting them should be more than enough to keep them clean.

Decor Style Compatibility:

Wall baskets can suit a number of different interior designs. They complement the aesthetic of a room without drawing too much attention to themselves, which suits a minimalist look, or a room with staid colours. Wall baskets are especially suited to a more rustic, ‘basic’ style of home decor that favours earthy tones over pastel. However, if you can find brightly-dyed baskets, they can be used even in a room full of colours for a fun, playful design.

Ease of Installation:

Most art prints come in a roll that you need to select a frame for and get it framed by a professional, all before you even put it up. At Underlyn, we help you select the right artworks by recommending prints that suit your style. We then help you pair them with our collection of exclusive handmade wooden frames that will really make the art pop. Our acid-free mats keep the artworks from getting discoloured, and the clear acrylic in our frames never touches the print itself. Just give it a quick dust with a brush every couple of days and it’ll be looking good as new.

Decor Style Compatibility:

The best thing about art prints is how there’s an artwork for literally any kind of interior decor. Underlyn has artworks spanning decades of styles: Minimalist, Impressionist, Contemporary, Abstract, Pop Art, Linocut. We even have art in the various traditional styles of India, Japan, Scandinavian and Old American. 4. Posters

Posters used to be how people used to advertise plays, movies or the travelling circus coming to town. Over the years, they’ve evolved into their own unique art form, full of bright colours and dynamic subjects that catch your attention. These days, they’re more of a celebration of pop culture and fandoms, and they bring a quirky, fun energy to any wall you use them on. You’re choosing wall decor for your home. Nothing represents you better than the things you love best.

Pricing:

Posters are supposed to be inexpensive and accessible. You can find posters for as cheap as $5-$10 making them perfect for students or someone who’s just moved into a new home. Most of them don’t even need framing.

Availability:

Posters referencing pop culture, movies, music, famous quotes or just funny one-liners are absolutely everywhere. You can find them on online stores like AllPosters and PosterGully, and even on Amazon. If you’re looking for something that’s easy to find and buy, posters are the way to go.

Ease of Installation:

If you want to go for the quintessential college dorm look, all you need is a poster and a roll of tape. Use removable poster tape if you’re worried about wall paint peeling off when you remove it. If you’re looking to preserve your posters better, you can get them framed and hang them on the wall.

Maintenance:

Posters aren’t exactly made with the best quality materials, and the paper and inks can deteriorate over time. If you’ve pasted them to the wall with tape, it’s almost impossible to remove without damaging your poster. But unless it’s an antique poster (which you’d have framed anyway), you can just replace it with a new one. Which is just as well, because your interests might have totally changed in that time.

Decor Style Compatibility:

Posters are loud and catch your attention by design. They go great with entertainment areas or rec rooms, or even ‘man-caves’. You could even frame a retro-themed poster or witty quote for your kitchen, or living room. Poster go really well with rooms that are brightly decorated because they tend to stand out. But unless you have a minimalist or abstract poster design, you shouldn’t put it in a room with traditional or minimalist decor.

5. Relief Sculptures

via The Ancient Home

Perhaps the most unique item on this list, relief sculptures are like bringing a piece of ancient Greece or Mesopotamia to your home. They get their name from the fact that they give depth and contours to a two dimensional image to make a three dimensional art piece. Many sculptures even feature an aged, worn effect as though they’ve only just been dug up from an archaeological site, giving the piece more of an antiquated look.

Pricing:

Relief sculptures are heavy on material, making them more expensive than most wall art. While cheaper plaster or clay pieces are around $30-$50, larger works made from marble can be as expensive as $150-$400 or more, depending on the size and quality.

Availability:

It’s fairly easy to find plaster and clay sculptures in various styles on Amazon and Etsy. Marble sculptures, on the other hand, are a bit rarer. You can find collections of them on The Ancient Home, and quite a few are available on Etsy.

Ease of Installation:

Sculptures in clay and plaster are fairly light and usually come with a slot to hang them from a nail, which makes for easy installation. Even though marble pieces aren’t solid stone, they can be quite heavy. Your wall needs to be made of solid brick or concrete to install a marble sculptures. The best thing about many relief sculptures is how durable they are, and they can be installed both indoors and outdoors. (Just make sure yours can be placed outdoors before you do it.)

Maintenance:

Relief sculptures require little to no maintenance, since they don’t fade in sunlight or get damaged by moisture. Just keep them dusted and clean, and you’ll have no problems.

Decor Style Compatibility:

Relief sculptures are much more situational than a lot of other wall decor. Smaller pieces made with clay or plaster work well in rooms with a limited colour palette of one or two light colours. Larger marble pieces are more suited to big houses or mansions that have an old-world aesthetic to them. They especially complement furniture topped with granite or marble.
